Berlin is Europe's leading city in sustainable solutions and is setting standards in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. As a center of innovation in the fight against climate change, the city is crisscrossed by green corridors that protect against heat shocks and precipitation damage. Green roofs and façades as well as community gardens promote biodiversity. Public spaces are oases of well-being. The energy supply is resilient and geared towards climate neutrality by 2045, with innovative approaches to energy generation and use that provide Berlin companies with reliable and cost-effective energy.

Berlin is intensifying local and global partnerships to promote the exchange of experience and progress. We are focussing in particular on innovation scouting, in which we seek out, test and continuously improve innovations internationally. Strong global corporate partnerships help to achieve common climate goals. Cooperation between start-ups, SMEs and research institutions is intensified, especially internationally and with a focus on dialogue with young people.

In order to minimise the risk of flooding, store rainwater and prevent the formation of heat islands, Berlin is relying on the needs-based planting of areas, roofs and façades as well as the use of AI to make the best possible use of its own water potential. In addition to intelligent rainwater irrigation management, grey water systems are increasingly being used in the private, industrial and commercial sectors to save precious drinking water. Legal framework conditions for water reuse mitigate the effects of water scarcity due to climate change.

Berlin and Brandenburg are working closely together as partners to sustainably develop a green and blue infrastructure across state borders. Berlin is cooperating closely with Brandenburg on the topic of wind power, is a consumer of wind power from the surrounding area and is further expanding regional electricity partnerships in the metropolitan region. Incentive mechanisms have been created for joint business models in the metropolitan region.
